What are Triglycerides?

Triglycerides are the type of fats, which is found in the blood. They work as the main source of energy. When you ingest calories in the food, not everything is used up. Some of them are converted into triglycerides and are moved to the fat cells. They are stored in the fat cells and can be used whenever the body needs energy in between the meals you eat. But it is worth noting that excess of triglycerides is harmful for health and such a condition of excess of triglycerides is called as hypertriglyceridemia. The normal range of triglycerides must be less than 150 mg/dL. In order to avoid the risk of hypertriglyceridemia, it is vital to:
Reduce saturated and processed foods
Reduce intake of alcohol
Put a curb on smoking habit
Avoid Transfats
Add fiber to the diet by having more of vegetables and fruits
Take up physical exercises everyday or around 30 minutes
Use medications if any, as recommended by the doctor
Remember, excess triglycerides in the plasma can increase the risk of coronary heart problems. Thus even though you rely on medications, diet and lifestyle management is important to avoid health complications due to excessive triglycerides in the plasma. |
